I Want to Break Free is an original musical, written by Celtic Spirit Dancers’ director Sara Sheehan. Featuring the music of Queen, the story highlights many of the current pressures faced by today’s teenagers.

Velma recognizes that she is a class geek. None of her classmates are her friends and she sits alone in class anxious for the school day to be over when she can be free to enjoy her passion for Irish dance and music. Her social awkwardness at school already makes her a target to bullying; but recognition of her true identity keeps her from conforming to peer expectations and being someone she is not. Despite this, she still keeps her Irish dancing a secret; afraid that by leaving her comfort zone at the dance studio, she will fail and lose her one true passion.

Like Velma, Tammy also has a passion for Irish dancing and assists classes at the same dance studio. She, too, keeps this extracurricular passion a secret, however, for a different reason. Tammy wants to fit in with the ‘cool’ girls at school- Crystal, Shauna and Jessica- who are Velma’s bullies. Tammy fears that revealing her own passion for Irish dance and music will cause rejection from the girls because they do not share the same interest in Irish dance. To avoid rejection and the potential of being bullied like Velma, Tammy prefers to conform to her friends expectations, regardless of her own true identity.

An upcoming talent show at the school puts Velma’s and Tammy’s fears front and center.

What will the girls do?

Will Velma expose her passion for Irish dancing truly embracing her identity despite her fear of losing it? Will Tammy choose to be true to herself, risking rejection from the ‘cool’ girls?

Will they break free?
